The tall one had brown hair and a white coat. The small one had a yellow dress and orange boots. They were holding hands. Above them, in large, uneven letters: ME AND MOMMY. In the corner, small and neat compared to the rest: I miss you — C I didn't say anything. I couldn't.

"Show me a little." Logan looked at the drawing board and then back at Silas. Silas was not smiling but he wasn't being unpleasant either. It was just a simple request. Logan walked over to the drawing board and picked up one of the pencils. He stood there for a second thinking about what to draw. Then he just started. He drew a rough outline of a building first, something simple with clean edges. He worked slowly because he hadn't drawn in a while and his hand felt uncertain if he could do it.

Maybe if I leave him outdoors long enough, he’ll end up going to the toilet by himself. I shifted my attention back to the sketchpad and pencils that I had prepared. This location was perfect because there was a shade and a few different types of flowers nearby that would serve as a good subject for sketching. To start with something quite basic, I decided to sketch a yellow rose that was nearby. Crouching down close to it, I began sketching the rose while occasionally glancing over to check on Little Hayden.

For a little guy, he is way too good. There are all different kinds of drawings that are too neat, I shuffle through them, trying to find one to stick on our fridge in the kitchen. I smile to myself when I come across a picture of him and I then there's Jasmine and even Alex, with and without devil horns— that makes me laugh. I pass by other boyish things, like cars, dragons, dogs, dinosaurs and ninjas, lots and lots of them.

Just keep distracting yourself. My doodles have taken on a decidedly dark turn. What started as swirly floral shapes have devolved into jagged lines that look like lightning bolts. After I've filled almost every corner of the page, I flip to the next one and start a new drawing. This time I draw the room where I'm sitting. Then quick sketches of Rafe, Edie, and little Melody, but those aren't very good. Maybe I'll do better once I've spent more time with them.

Outside the window rain tapped softly against the glass. Students hurried beneath umbrellas while lights slowly flickered on around campus. Jessica looked down at the drawing again. Picked up her pencil. Sophie glanced over. "What are you doing?" Jessica stared at the page quietly. Then softly said: "Adding something." "What?" Jessica looked down at the unfinished face. Slowly... Very slowly... she drew a smile. Not a huge one. Not a perfect one. Just a small one. A real one. Then she sat staring at it.

He grabs another color and draws a house, “and this is our house.” Another color and another smaller stick figure, “and this is our kid playing with our dog.”
