Kids that age only needed one good thing pointed out. Sinclair, the visual teacher, approached me. I felt shy at her comment and wondered if she was telling the truth or just being kind to me. I settled for the last thought. She led me towards the picture booth. "I'll do good, Ms. Sinclair," I said after she walked off, right after showing me the picture booth box. She nodded, and I slapped my head, wishing I'd said nothing. I haven't been here for five minutes, and I'm already showing my weirdness. I cursed myself. Shortly, couples were popping up, and the party began. Some came to take pictures. Since the school couldn't afford a better picture booth machine. I had to be the one to collect the cash they had to pay before taking a picture.

With a sigh, I shook my head at her silliness. She snagged the note again, quickly doodling a picture of two people, obviously a boy and a girl. I laughed to myself as she made the boy's neck and shoulders look like the Incredible Hulk. She drew crowns on each figure's head and wrote "Prom King and Queen?" I rolled my eyes. Then she wrote "Isaac + Tru" under the picture and slipped it back to me with a giggle. She was killing me!

Children always did. He sat cross-legged on the rug with his crayons spread in a careful semicircle, coloring slower than usual, pressing too hard. The wax squeaked faintly on the paper. He didn’t hum. He didn’t chatter. He didn’t look up when Lila passed. She crouched beside him. “Hey, bug. Shelves filled with stuffed animals, puzzles stacked neatly in a corner, art supplies spread across a small table. Above them she had drawn a crooked sun and written their names. Lance swallowed. “That’s… really good.” Tamera smiled proudly. Behind him, Ragnar stepped quietly into the room. Lance turned and looked at him. For a moment neither of them spoke. Then Lance glanced back at the toys, the drawings, the warm house around them.

Coco hesitated, wondering if she should just leave. Then, she grabbed her bag and took out a notepad and a pen. Coco drew a cartoon character on the paper and handed it to Lucas. "Here, this is for you. I hope you'll feel better." Lucas lowered his gaze to the paper she had handed to him. Coco had drawn a simple cartoon character of him. With a few simple strokes, she had captured his facial features precisely. The eyes bore a significant resemblance to his eyes, allowing others to recognize him in the drawing.

I clicked back to the messages to reply. Rebbeca: That’s a very special number, happy birthday little girl. she says, very serious for someone whose ponytail is halfway to falling off. “Really?” I lean forward and catch the watercolor box before it drops. “Tell me all about it.” She sits up, shifting again: legs tucked under, one knee up, sketchbook on her lap. She flips to the middle. The page is full of doodles. There’s a drawing of a round table, four little stick figures with names floating over their heads: ME, CLARA, LEO, ANAÏS. In the middle of the table, a small box labeled in big letters: “CRAYON (NO EAT!)”

Teddy held up his paper with a sketch of a purple dinosaur with a horn on its head. Sophie gasped. "A unicorn dinosaur? Teddy, you've changed the world." Yeah, I can't. I love kids but there's only so much I can do. Lily frustrates the hell out of me every single day but she knows just how much fun I can take. She doesn't even sketch. Lily giggled and poked the Unicorn dinosaur sketch, earning a laugh from said Teddy. Another kid with a missing front tooth shoved a drawing into Lily's hands. "This is for you. It's a house, with a cat. Do you like cats?"

She’d taken an interest in drawing lately, and it had stuck more than her previous interests had. But then again, she’s only five. There was plenty of time for her to find herself yet. “This is me, this is Mommy, this is Daddy, this is you Uncle Kells, and Aunt Gemi, Simon, Sawyer and Sadie,” she frowns. “I couldn’t draw Uncle Haden and Aunt Gemi big, so they are small.” She points to the smaller figures at the side. I notice another figure drawn in between Lucy and the figure who is supposed to be me, smaller than everyone and beaming.
