We carried our spoils through the village. Solenne dumped her haul on the floor—pickled mushrooms, copper bangles, hand-cut soap that smelled like river mint—and flopped onto the cushion pile by the fire like a satisfied thief. ~ The rain had started before sunrise, loud and thick like the sky had split wide open. Both Katherine and Nathaniel were positively surprised by the men's eagerness, though not exactly as much by the end result. The meat was too salty and the mushrooms hacked into an inch of their lives. They almost looked like brownish flour. Nonetheless, Katherine appreciated their afford and ate two bowls of fried mushrooms with a smile.

Eventually, the man drowned and never appeared again.

Joanna raised an eyebrow, looking smug. I didn't want to give anything away, so I asked, "Yeah, where'd he go?" "Tough luck," she said.
