It had been a long time since she had touched such delightful books, and now, picking them up again, the attraction had an added layer.
The weather was terrible. After lunch, a drizzle began to patter outside the window. The tap-tap of water droplets hitting the tin roof rang incessantly. Reading in the dim light made Lin Yilan a bit dizzy. She pushed the book aside to take a break when suddenly, there was a noise outside the door.
There were scattered footsteps of more than one person. A stray dog somewhere was kicked, letting out a yelp before jumping up and fleeing in panic.
Voices drew nearer, sounding like several children conversing.
