I told myself that I would find a way, but I was lying to myself even then. Dartmoor was filled with unfamiliar scents. They became more pungent and bitter the further I went, until they were almost overwhelming. Never were they stronger than when I reached a dark, crumbling castle. It sat high on a hill, the ground around it barren save for dead trees. Thin red vines ran up the castle’s decaying stone walls, and as I neared, I noticed fleshy tendrils rising like towers from its base, waving in the wind. Were these the “anomalies” the book had referred to? Did that mean I was too late?

She explained each step as she went along, captivating the viewers who initially tuned in for her looks but stayed for the cooking lesson. Besides mushroom soup, Lindsay also prepared a pot of oatmeal with diced ham and soft-boiled eggs. Elric, having finished his tasks, watched her, mesmerized by her focus and skill. At one point, we found Mara kneeling over Lissa's unconscious form near a patch of suspiciously red mushrooms. "She just collapsed!" Mara sobbed. "One minute she was fine, the next, " Cressa checked Lissa's pulse while I examined the mushrooms. "Wild mushrooms," I identified. "Not fatal, but it'll keep her unconscious for some hours." I left a canteen of water and propped Lissa against a tree where she'd be visible. It was the most we could do.

Yet, I could see sparks of fire illuminating in a distant forest. I stopped myself as I was frozen stiff. Phineas was as petrified as I as we both looked. Because what mortified us the most was the sight in front of us. A large smoke slowly formed into what seemed to me was a shape of a mushroom. And it was coming from where the Skollist troops headed. Smoke overlapped the night sky as many trees were turned into charcoal. It should be strange seeing a gigantic mushroom cloud but it felt so different. More like the sight felt more morbid than surreal.

That night, the other girls and I were sharing the kitchen to prepare our food items for the garden party event. Linda still wasn’t speaking to me, so we hadn’t been able to pair our selections as well as the other girls. However, I could guess that she had chosen some kind of egg appetizer, since she had been so fond of those during our earlier meeting. Since she was picking something with protein, I decided to pick a more veggie-type food. I scoured the cook books, skipping the ones that sounded too complicated, and settled on stuffed mushrooms. I set to making the mushrooms, then I waited my turn for the ovens.

The moon hung in the sky like a brilliant, oversized flashlight. Lila leaned her forehead against the window pane. It felt cool and soothing. Peering into the illuminated night, she looked out onto the mountain in hopes of spotting Marcus and his pack approaching the castle. She’d had no word from Ben about the rescue Jasper and the werewolves were planning for her, but this would be the prime time for them to do it. She closed her eyes and tried to visualize Jasper in his wolf form as he raced through the woods with the pack, but the pain in her back wouldn’t allow her mind to focus.

She was so hooked into the novel she was reading and as she flipped her twentieth page that afternoon, something fell out of the book and fluttered onto the floor. “Hm? Is that…” For the first time since she started reading that intriguing novel, she shifted her attention, reluctantly tearing away from her fantasy word and back into reality to pick up the little paper. But it was a picture that made her smile wryly. On it was a little baby, Mario when he was just a few months old. All wrapped up in a baby blue shawl and looking to be asleep. She fondly rubbed her fingers over the smooth surface of the picture in her hands. She was recollecting the past again.

It was actually awkward between us as I sat down opposite him and kept staring at him while he ate. ​I picked up the cutlery to eat but stopped when my eyes fell on the mushrooms on the plate. ​Oh no. ​I slowly placed my trembling hands on my thigh to avoid drawing attention. Of all the things in the universe, I decided to be allergic to mushrooms. It was the one thing I was deeply afraid of. ​“You're not eating?” he asked with a raised eyebrow, wondering what I was looking at. I shook my head. ​“I'm fine... You can carry on without me.” I stood up immediately and returned to the room; only then was I able to catch my breath.

" Lady Molly's POV It was foggy when I went outside looking for some edible mushrooms. Like the usual, I wore my cloak to protect my skin from the cold breeze and also to hide my own appearance if ever someone would spot me in here. Edible mushrooms cannot be found here in the North part of the forest. So, I have no other choice but to return to where our old cottage is. There are also lots of dried leaves on the floor but some of them are wet so it doesn't make any crunchy sounds at all. Mira smiled “Take your time.” Samuel didn’t have any expectation for the food. It was just a polite gesture… but the flavor blew his mind. He was tempted to hide some of the mushrooms in his pockets and take back for his master. Jack came back carrying the basket. Mira followed behind…of course, she didn’t forget to throw the furs in space before coming in. “This is simply divine.” Samuel licked his fingers shamelessly as he finished eating the mushrooms. Mira bought Jack’s breakfast out as well.
