A ripple of darkness seeped from the shattered entrance. Not a creature. Not a person. A void. It crawled across the snow like living shadow, stretching, reaching, twisting into form. Or rather— Forms. Three Hunters emerged, towering, skeletal figures formed from shadow and frost. Their limbs were long and jagged, like broken branches. Their skull-like faces had no eyes. Only gaping holes that screamed hunger. Elle whispered, terrified: “Morana awakened three. I hoped… I prayed… she would only risk one.” Zander snarled, stepping protectively in front of me.

“HE’S A FUCKING PREDATOR! DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS? HE EATS MEAT! HE HUNTS HIS PREY AND KILLS IT! DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE? YOU’RE MEAT AND PREY ALL WRAPPED UP WITH A PRETTY BOW! FOR CHRIST’S SAKE, NATASHA! DO YOU HAVE A DEATH WISH?” I jerked away from him. “THE ONLY CREATURES IN THESE WOODS WHO HUNT ME ARE YOU GUYS!,” I screamed hysterically. I turned around and took off towards home. I didn’t stop running until I reached my porch. I put my key in the lock and tried to turn it. It didn’t move. I frowned and pulled the key out. Sleep didn't come. Instead, nightmares bled into my waking hours. I saw myself in the healer's hut, blood soaking the sheets beneath me. I saw Carlos holding a tiny, still form, his face twisted with grief. I saw Elena's face superimposed over Layna's, laughing as poison coursed through my veins. I gave birth in my dream and the baby was born with an eye punctured. In the worst dream, I was holding our baby, but when I looked into their face, Elena's black eyes stared back at me.

Then he smashed something he held in his hand, and I realized it was Hunter's heart… Breath escaped me as if someone had punched me in the stomach. I shook my head, desperate to wake up from the nightmare before me. Then I looked at Hunter's dead body lying not far from my feet, and tears streamed from my eyes. I looked at Drystan and a burning hatred flooded me like a molten lava. "Monster..." I bit out. "Why, thank you, Nala!" He laughed before hitting me and turning my world black.

I found myself in an unfamiliar bed, and it jolted me awake. The air was filled with the aroma of food. I looked around and found myself in a clean apartment. My clothes weren't changed, thank goodness. Someone texted me. Samuel. 'Working overtime tonight. Happy Valentine's Day, honey.' I scrolled through TikTok. Samuel probably had no idea that I knew his secret account's details. He had a short uploaded. That bastard was having fun with some ladies. They looked fresh and innocent. He had a good eye for them, I guess.

Hunter howled in answer, the sound trapped behind my teeth. --- On the third night, the dreams started. Lilac standing in a glowing pool, her skin kissed by mist, her smile brighter than the moon. "Come home," I begged. But she turned away. I woke with blood on my tongue from biting back screams. 'She is fading... I can't sense her...' Hunter howled in my head. The healers whispered when they thought I couldn't hear. "The babe won't make it." "She may never wake." "The king's gone mad."

“It’s kind of cute, seeing the nightmare of this school acting like such a puppy.” He pouted. “How did that name even stick to me? I wasn’t even that bad.” “Please.” I rolled my eyes. “I only came to this school a semester ago—how would I know? But according to Eli, you broke a lot of hearts. And, sadly, girls always fall for the bad ones.” I raised my fingers in air quotes. “Not all nightmares are bad, Cross. They called you the nightmare they wouldn’t want to wake up from. Though, honestly, I thought otherwise when I first met you.” I giggled.

Deeply wrong. She knelt beside a patch of soil where the attack occurred. The earth was blackened—tainted. She pressed her fingers to it. A sharp sting lanced up her arm. A whisper slid through her mind. "You don’t belong here, Luna." Ella recoiled, stumbling back. Her breath came in short gasps, heart pounding. She wasn’t imagining it. Something was buried here. And it was alive. --- That night, the packhouse trembled with unrest. The young began having nightmares—waking up screaming, clawing at their sheets, crying about shadows dragging them away.

The light shot straight at the thin shadow. The creature didn’t scream. It broke apart like smoke in the wind, gone with a soft sigh. The light touched the possessed hunters. They blinked, waking from a deep sleep. Liam fell, crossbow bolt still in his chest. For a moment, there was silence. The crawling outside stopped. The hunters stared at Liora. She was breathing hard, the light fading from her skin. The cold presence settled back, satisfied.

She clawed at the sheets, her eyes wide and fixed on the ceiling. "They... they found the frequency," she whispered, her voice layered with the static of a thousand screaming souls. "The Harvesters. They aren't breaking the door, Killian. They're walking through the light." A shadow detached itself from the corner of the room. It wasn't a wolf, and it wasn't a man. It was a jagged, multi-limbed nightmare of smoke and obsidian claws, its "face" a swirling vortex of violet energy. It moved with a sickening, stuttering grace, appearing three feet closer with every blink of the eye.
