Later that night, after everyone went to bed, I sat on my childhood twin mattress staring at the ceiling glow-in-the-dark stars I’d stuck up in middle school. I opened the photo again. Zoomed in on the fairy lights. On the empty space where I should have been. Then I typed: Miss your grumpy face already. Pizza looks sad without me stealing slices. Sent. Three dots appeared almost immediately. Then: Miss stealing them more. Another photo: him lying on his bed, shirtless, arm behind his head, looking straight at the camera with that half-smirk I knew too well. The fairy lights painted gold across his tattoos. My heart did a stupid flip.
