The stranger snuggled closer to Victor, sniffing his hair. This was his human. This human belonged to no one but him. The stranger snuggled even closer, as if he were hoping to crawl into Victor’s skin. He wondered how long he’d have to wait before Victor woke up. He wanted to listen to Victor talk again, wanted to hear his voice. There were so many words he’d only read in books that Victor could say so confidently, so many new words he wanted to learn. But Victor was sleeping now, and the stranger was bored.

Her breath caught. It had been a long time. Too long. And it shouldn’t be this. Not to the sound of a stranger’s voice. Not to someone she hadn’t spoken to. Not to someone she couldn’t trust. He gazed up at the girls, and continued, "It doesn't even show you who the author is, there is no preface, not even contents. Don't believe in anything that has 'magic' in it dears." "Hey!" Louisa interrupted, scowling at the stranger. "It doesn't mean if you didn't understand a thing, you should say bad things about the book. Give me that!"
