Thorin asked, “What is it?” Haldir’s shaking hands fumbled with the door so he started beating on it. “She took something, Thorin. I saw her drink something from a vile.” As the words left his mouth, the trance like state from the farmhouse fell over Ben. His heart pounded in his ears as he saw Aster open the door then Thorin and Haldir run through. Ben followed behind them slowly like he was walking in quicksand. He heard muffled sounds around him as he cleared the staircase and turned the corner to the hall. He saw Thorin drop to his knees in the hallway outside the door. Tears fell from Ben’s eyes as he walked past Thorin and saw Haldir shaking Imara’s lifeless body against the bed.

Belladonna watched as the dagger went downwards to the King’s exposed chest; her heartbeat slamming against one another rapidly. It was too fast. The White King sprung up and directed the dagger to Bori’s stomach instead. The blade drained him of his blood and he fell back, dry and dead, like a tiny stink of bones overshadowed by his robes. The door swung open immediately, and Dogori rushed in. He jammed the end of his staff into Bori’s chest and he vanished into ashes. Then he pointed his staff at Belladonna. “The human next for the third death. She is one of them.”

The Elder snarled and took a step back. Just one. He wasn’t done. But he had seen enough—for now. He vanished in a flash of shadow, his magic retreating into the trees like smoke on the wind. Silence fell. Selene dropped to her knees, gasping. Theoden collapsed beside her. She crawled to him, her hands sliding beneath his shoulders, pulling him close. He was shaking. Covered in sweat and blood. But alive. “You idiot,” she whispered, tears in her voice. He grinned, weak and cracked. “You’re welcome.”
