I laugh when I hear Dad’s loud groan behind us, finally pulling away when Mabel appears at the doorway. “Hi, Mabel.” She wraps me in a warm hug, and I notice how fragile her body feels against mine. “I’m going to miss you, sweetheart,” she says, and there’s tears in her eyes when she pulls back. “Promise me you’ll always take care of each other.”
