The walk to Maggi quarters is longer than expected, winding through corridors I’ve never been allowed down before. Eventually we stop in front of a huge mahogany door, draped in bones. Literal bones. King Sven doesn’t knock. He just pushes the door open, and the first thing I see makes me freeze. Maggi is sprawled face-up on the floor, arms splayed out like she’s been dropped from the ceiling. There’s a goblet tipped over near her hand, dark liquid staining the floorboards. Her silver hair forms a halo around her. No movement. No sound.

This time I couldn't stop the whimper that escaped. "Enough," Caelan growled. "Stop the test. Now." "Almost done," Mira said through gritted teeth. "Just need to—" The silver light flared brilliant white. So bright I had to close my eyes. Then it vanished. The pain stopped instantly, leaving me gasping. "It's done." Mira stumbled back, looking exhausted. "The magic worked. We have answers." Caelan's hand found mine before I could pull away. I let him hold it, too drained to care about our fight.

The hand formed again, and he clapped with a smile at me, his face beaming as if I had done something gallant. “Alright, I think it's time we wrap things up…” he snorted, as if this were a movie scene to him. “You've had your fun, but this is where the journey ends for you…” “Nah, you're wrong…” I chuckled. “The reverse is the case. This is where it ends for you!” I flung a fireball into the air and it swooped just past him by an inch.
