Takoda noticed the look. "You like this town," he stated flatly, his voice a low rumble. The sudden statement caught me entirely off guard. I looked past his shoulder toward the window. Main Street glowed beautifully beneath the fresh blanket of snow. Storefront wreaths hung heavy, twinkling lights wrapped the trees, and local people carried festive shopping bags through the frost. "I do," I murmured, turning back to him. His dark gaze stayed locked on me. "Most people our age can't wait to leave this place."

Trent pulled into the driveway. When he stopped the car he leaned forward to peer out of the windshield at the house before him. It was a barge brick building home that screamed money in a rustic, southern way. His stomach twisted nervously. The street was calm, I could tell this was a family-friendly neighborhood, with houses built one next to another, some were old, some fairly new, and in front of each house there was light. I could also tell this is not middle-class, this was middle and below. I didn't know what I expected, but it certainly wasn't for him to pull into Main Street. Downtown Mainstreet was the sort of area that screamed class. Then, in the far distance, Minnow saw the town looming. The houses were placed closer together as she got nearer to the townlet. It was the kind of town you could drive through and barely know you'd been there: one straight street, a couple of hundred yards long. The main street was lined with small picturesque stone buildings, old for this part of the world. People were out and about as the town was awake from its peaceful slumber under the early golden rays.
