Her eyes didn’t water. They didn’t need to. They were old, and tired, and filled with too many things that couldn’t be said. “And your child?” I asked, softly.

We were done working for the day. She had earned her drink. Hopefully not enough to end up unconscious again. As for me…I’d learned my lesson. One drunken night was more than enough. “When they move like that…” Mara began. I pulled my eyes away from the underground door and looked at her. “…it means a mission’s about to go down.” She lifted her glass and took a slow, satisfied sip. I frowned. “What kind of mission?” She shrugged. “I wish I knew.” I stayed quiet. Oddly enough…I wished I knew too.

“That thing that happened to Adam—have you seen anything like it before?” Mara’s jaw tightened. “Once. A long time ago.” I waited, but she didn’t elaborate. “What was it?” I pressed. Her eyes flicked to me, unreadable. “A possession,” she said finally. She didn't say any more. Instead, she walked to the reinforced door, listening for a moment. Then she said quietly, “You should rest. You’re going to need your strength.” “For what?” She glanced over her shoulder. “For what’s coming next.”

Mara’s voice was bright and teasing, her brown eyes glinting with joy as she leaned back on her hands, the sunlight illuminating her face, the glade a sanctuary, the warmth a shared memory. “Three years, and I still can’t believe we pulled it off,” Mara said, her laughter sharp and warm, her brown eyes sparkling, the flame pendant catching the sunlight, the warmth of the glade wrapping around her, the air thick with the scent of smoke, the glade a sanctuary, their bond a radiant light. “We kicked that marrow god’s ass!” She grinned, her body relaxed, the sunlight casting a golden glow on her face, the glade a haven, the warmth a shared triumph.

“Double-check formation lines! Healers with runners—no one moves until signal!” Mara strode past with a half-buckled cloak, her copper hair tied high, eyes gleaming with something close to exhilaration. She caught my wrist briefly. “You look ready,” she said. “You think I have a choice?” A sharp grin. “You always did better with a chase.” I snorted softly. “You sound far too eager for someone about to wade into war.” “Eager?” she shrugged. “No. But I like knowing the bastards who hurt her are about to pay.”

“No, not at all. At the time I was dealing with a different kind of pain...” “Mark.” She sighed in exasperation covering her face with both hands “I still don't understand how you could even think of marrying that woman.” “Olivia, my relationship with Jessica, was like a road without curves or holes, you know what I mean?” I saw her shaking her head “Well, a road without curves or holes is very boring, you are sure that you won’t be surprised by a curve or that you will be startled by a hole, so you just have to continue in a straight line. "Your mother is going to be furious!" The mention of my mother snaps me back to reality. I let go of Marco, shoving him away from me, and take a step back, breathing hard. The adrenaline is still pumping through me, my hands shaking with the effort to keep myself under control. Marco stumbles, clutching his side, blood trickling from his split lip. "You're a dead man, Caruso," he spits, his voice thick with anger and pain.

"If he's not back by then, I do what must be done." The first clawed foot crossed the threshold, dripping viscous black fluid that hissed where it struck stone. Mara didn't hesitate. She dropped to her knees before Adrian, her hands framing his face. "Adi? It's me. Look at me." "I don't understand?" My laugh came out jagged. "You think because I don't weep over family trees, I don't know loss?" The scars along my ribs burned—gifts from the same war that took my entire unit.
