Alaeric’s Pov I sat at my desk, the heavy oak surface covered in maps that I couldn't even see. My eyes were fixed on a single ink blotch, but my mind was miles away, trapped in that dusty, dark room with her. I could still feel the phantom heat where her fingers had brushed mine. She could hear animalistic sounds coming from outside and while she was glad that they had not been killed, she wasn’t so sure about this time. She could hear the snapping of bones and she knew that the fight got more serious than it was before. Right outside, Alpha Xander stood above Alpha Norman. “Spare me please.” He begged. Xander wanted to spare him so he could be an example to other Alphas who wanted to be over ambitious. He needed to remind them that this was his territory and nothing happened without his permission. But then he looked at the three girls whose lifeless bodies lay in the grass. He made up his mind.

We laughed together, and I felt the last remnants of that old chapter truly close. "That's not all I brought." Elena's expression turned mischievous as she nodded toward the party inside. "I also packed my best lingerie because have you seen Alpha Xander? Those shoulders should be illegal in at least twelve territories." I nearly choked on my champagne. "Xander? Alpha of Granite Ridge Xander?" "The very same." Elena's eyes tracked him through the glass doors as he laughed with Isabella and Cici. "I met him briefly in the entrance hall when I arrived. “You can try.” I focused my attention on him. Alex’s warning about me projecting my thoughts entered my mind. The last thing I wanted to do was to embarrass myself more than I already had so I cleared my mind and focused on something simple. “You’re a cat.” His lips twitched. “You’re mate is a jealous ass.” A laugh burst from my lips. “He also wants to kill me for sitting this close to you and making you laugh.” I risked a glance at Ryder. He was indeed glaring daggers at Xan.

But instead, he was turning those dark, heavy eyes toward me in the dim dashboard light, waiting for my answer. Just then, as if sensing the sudden, suffocating panic rising in my throat, Xavier continued smoothly, his voice taking on an assuring, almost gentle rhythm. "Don't worry, Marissa. You won't be stranded in a room full of stiff board members. Alina will be there too. I promise you wouldn't feel bored for a single second." He paused, a small, knowing tilt forming at the corner of his lips as he glanced at me through his thick lashes. "Perhaps we can finally catch a glimpse of her mysterious boyfriend, too."

It makes perfect sense in my mind. “It’s Sinful,” I say quickly. Kael frowns, looking at me skeptically, however, I’m sure I am right on that one. “Can’t you smell that? It’s jasmine, and what does Sinful’s scent? Jasmine…” Grayson blinks a few times, not quite understanding. Is he trying to make Rylan mad? Mara seems to notice, as she nudges Kaden again. When he glances down at her, she frowns, which is an amusing sight to see on her pretty face.
