Minus The MORNING’S ride back to the Sanctuary was shorter than I’d like. The weather was perfect, traffic was light, and as much as I hated to admit it, Cutter’s gift fit me like a glove. As brief as it was, the ride helped center me, to stop my mind from racing. As to what I was going to say to Cutter once we arrived, I had no idea. I wasn’t as angry for being jerked around as I was last night, but my confusion about the situation was growing.

I didn’t feel different except for the strange pull in my veins, the bond, the warmth pressing against my chest. “Yes!” she cried, her voice trembling between awe and excitement. “It’s because you’re his mate. You’ve been marked by him. Every Alpha King’s mate becomes… more. More radiant. More breathtaking. The bond itself reshapes you.” I shook my head in disbelief. “That’s impossible. I…I don’t look any different.” Mariah exchanged a knowing glance with the maid, then smirked as she tugged me insistently by the arm. “Come on. See for yourself.”

I move closer, drawn by something I don't understand, my fear momentarily eclipsed by fascination. The carvings are beautiful and terrible. Wolves with their heads thrown back in silent howls. Crescent moons in various phases, waxing and waning across the stone surface. Symbols I don't recognize but that make something deep in my chest tighten with recognition. How can I recognize something I've never seen before?
