Before the situation could get worse, Marcus arrived in the blink of an eye, protecting me from the attacks of hostile wolfies. He put himself between us and, with a fierce look, ordered them to retreat. "Enough!" he said, his deep and authoritative voice. "Stella is part of this pack now, and I will not allow anyone to hurt her." The wolfies hesitated, but ended up retreating, aware of Marcus' strength and power. He stood firm, making sure they moved away before turning their attention to me.

Mars called out from one corner when he noticed her about to enter a room near the kitchen. “Mr. King?” Malikha replied politely. Mars smiled and walked closer to her. “Just call me Mars. We used to go to school together, remember?” Malikha returned his smile and nodded. “Have you eaten yet? Where are you going?” Mars asked casually. “I’m not hungry yet, so I’d like to rest first. Excuse me, Mars,” Malikha answered before turning the doorknob and entering the servant’s room. Mars nodded, though surprise was written all over his face. He stood there for a moment in disbelief before heading into the living room to find Aidan, who was still talking with Raphael.

"They perfected the world until it was indestructible, and then the world choked them. They turned their entire biosphere into a product. Mars isn't a planet. It’s a corpse wrapped in a shroud that refuses to rot." The lights in the lab flickered. Outside the window, Aris looked up at the night sky. For the first time in his life, the Red Planet didn't look like a frontier of hope. It looked like a warning. A few hours later, the second batch of data arrived from the rover’s deep-drill site. It wasn't more soil. It was an object. The drill had hit a solid pocket three meters down. The image on the screen was grainy, but unmistakable.

This was gold intel. After nearly half an hour without pausing for breath, Mars finally wound down his encyclopedic monologue. "...so in summary, yes incredibly rare and formidable but largely shrouded in mystery to this day!" He finished with a self-satisfied little bow, as if expecting raucous applause after that performance. "Got it, very mysterious, much wow. Thanks Mars!" I said, shooting him some exaggerated finger guns. He looked slightly crestfallen I didn't fawn over his nerd cred more, but recovered quickly.

"The Diaspora is starting, and the people on the ground are losing their minds! They think we're leaving them behind to rot!" Aradaa’s head snapped toward him, but the movement was mechanical, jerky. "The servers... they're full, Kaelor. Earth is a cradle that’s too small for the giants we’ve become. The spores have to land. Mars is already beginning to breathe. Can't you hear the soil waking up?"

The sector M-69 also known as Hagar Mills was one such settlement on Earth’s nearest neighbor, Mars, the red planet. Life on Mars was difficult. After terra forming the planet’s surface and creating an artificial hospitable atmosphere, the settlers from Earth formed their own government and by the year 2095, Mars had become and independent world, with its most productive regions being governed and ruled by self appointed warlords or chiefs. Earth’s only recourse was to trade with the rogue settlements, with women being the primary source of barter for the raw materials needed for its existence.
