“And what is that?” Marcus asked, his smile widening.
“Love,” Clara whispered, her voice breaking yet fierce. “Love that cannot be poisoned, no matter how deep your shadows sink.”
Marcus tilted his head, regarding her like a predator studying prey that dared to bare its fangs. He stepped closer, lifting a hand to stroke the air just inches from her cheek, not daring to touch. The shard pulsed, as if in response to his presence.
“You think love will protect him?” Marcus hissed, his tone suddenly sharp. “Love is weakness. Love is a blade turned inward. And I will make sure he sees that before he dies.”
