“You think I don't know what I am doing?” Xira asked, turning her head sharply in the direction of Mara.
Mara flinched and bowed her head. “No… No ma’am, I just…”
“Enough!” Xira thundered, her sharp voice adding to my headache. “Leave this place at once, and don't you dare return until I send for you. You’re a distraction.”
Mara hesitated, with her eyes darting to me helplessly, but I gave her a weak nod. She walked away, muttering under her breath, and for a moment, as I watched her leave, everything faded into a blur except for my own labored breathing.
