Just one word inside. Me. I kept flipping. Page thirty-five, "Season 1 Ending Options." Two versions were written out. Version A: the protagonist discovers the insider is his own wife. He doesn't forgive her. He turns and walks into the heat zone. Series end. Below it, a line in red ink, not written by me — "Too bleak. Rejected. Go with Version B." Version B: cut the wife storyline entirely. The protagonist has all his memories wiped, gets implanted with a new identity, and is dropped into Season 2 to continue.

The air around her behaved differently. She found our table and her face lit up. "Conrad, I'm so sorry I'm late — the council secretary said it was fine to come even though I missed the formal start." She touched his shoulder briefly, then turned that warm smile on me. "Mara.
