While me, Alex, and Vincent decided to walk. At first I thought Land of Ashes was just a symbolic title because that's where the bodies of werewolves, victims of war, were burned to ashes. But Land of Ashes is really colored ... gray. No trees or grass grew in the area, nothing lived on it. Just a gray-brown expanse of barren land about the size of two football fields. In the new surroundings there are dense trees that surround. And above there the evening sky is orange as a contrast background.

The ground tremored slightly under Maggie’s feet. The poor tree shook and bits of its dark, hard bark fell on the forest floor. Asher hit it again and more bits of bark fell off this time exposing the creamy flesh of the tree slightly moist with underground water and Asher’s blood. Maggie ran forward in horror and her eyes dropped to Asher’s fists. They were healing quickly but that did not stop her from worrying about the bits of peeling flesh and dripping blood that mix with the mossy green forest floor. “What are you doing?” Maggie demanded as she ran to him and took hold of his arm that was tensed up. His flesh was wet and silky with sweat.

Lukas said, and they both smiled at him, Ash giving a small wave before they stepped out of the shadows and began heading further into the forest. The trees here were huge, their trunks covered with moss and vines, and the undergrowth was thick. The area had that fresh, green, slightly damp kind of scent of a long-lived temperate forest, and he smiled as he felt Ash breathe it in deeply beside him. "You like it here?" he asked, and she nodded, "Yeah, it feels good. Peaceful, and kind of soothing in a way," she said, looking around and taking it all in.

I followed it, going out through the kitchen back door. My heart banged at the sight before me. There was blood everywhere, then a loud growl sounded from somewhere in the woods. It was Asher's. I felt fear marching down my spine, I rushed into the woods, following the growls and it led me to a large meadow. There were several bodies around, all floating in the massive pool of blood.

The cloud of smoke disappeared and the roots of the tree shot from the ground and stopped at my feet, then rose to meet my hand. I took it without hesitation. The tree hugged me and I fell into a dark haze. ~~ “I’m sorry I tried to harm you,” a deep voice said. “Who are you?” I asked. “I apologize; my name is Asher. I’m the Aspen tree you’ve come to,” it said. “I came because you called me,” I said. I looked around trying to follow the voice. “No need for that. There’s no light here. I didn’t know it was a new era,” he said.

Without a word, we walk away from Joslyn’s grave, leaving a part of our past behind, as the huge Oak tree that had been once our hang out spot stood guard at our friends grave, fulfilling her wish to stay in her most favorite spot, forever, for eternity. ****************************************** The End
