The purple light in the walls flared, burning so bright it turned the library a blinding, painful white.
“Phase Six,” the boy announced, his child’s voice booming in their minds. “The Joining.”
He held out a small, perfect hand toward Lucas. And in Lucas’s pocket, the old black key their last weapon began to burn. A searing heat shot through the fabric. Lucas yelled, grabbing at it, dropping it to the floor with a clatter. The boy didn’t touch it. He just looked. And the metal key melted into a sad, silver puddle on the floor.
