The space was small, and once they were inside, there was no room left for me. I moved from cover to cover alone as gunfire swept across the street. Then a stray bullet tore toward me. I shut my eyes, muttering, "This is where it ends." Something slammed into me and threw me sideways. When I opened my eyes, Stefan stood between me and the source of the shot. The bullet had struck his abdomen. Blood soaked through his shirt and ran over his hands. I caught him before he could fall, and I could not stop crying. He lifted a hand and wiped my tears.

Her teeth flashed white in the dim rooftop light. "Look at them down there," Lydia hissed under her breath, her chest rising and falling in shallow, erratic hitches. It was unusually heavy. As I examined the ammunition, a chill ran down my spine. The bullets were encased in silver, with a hard lead core, custom-made to inflict maximum damage on creatures like me. Silver, the one thing that could weaken us, render us vulnerable. It was like a poison, a toxic metal that could seep into our veins and strip us of our strength, and it could lead to death if it struck out vitals.

The interior of the cargo hold erupted into a deafening symphony of tearing metal and screeching alarms as the first volley of Chronomos kinetic rounds punched through the aluminum hull.
