When I greeted his son, a wide grin spread across Marcus’s face.
"Sophia, my father never mentioned you were this beautiful," Marcus said, extending his hand and lifting mine to his lips. His eyes locked with mine as he placed a gentle kiss on my hand.
"Thank you," I replied, my cheeks turning red, more from the idea that I’d made an impression on the governor so much that he mentioned me to his family. "You’re a very fine-looking gentleman yourself," I said awkwardly—a terrible introvert’s attempt at returning a compliment. As soon as the words left my mouth, they sounded foolish, but everyone seemed to play it off.
