Tim insisted, shaking his head.
“And I don’t have money. If she’s not here today, I can’t pay anything. She doesn’t even know us…”
“You already have,” another voice cut in.
A middle-aged doctor who had just arrived stepped forward, adjusting his coat. He looked at Tim for a moment, then let out a small chuckle.
“You already paid Dr. Belle,” he said simply.
Tim blinked. “What…?”
“With a cob of corn,” the doctor added warmly.
The words landed like a shock. Tim stood completely still, eyes widening in disbelief. Slowly, he turned his head, searching the hallway, the staff, the movement around him—until his gaze finally stopped.
