But tonight, I needed that flame, that flickering light, to open the envelope.
My fingers trembled as I peeled back the flap.
Inside, a single sentence, written in the same careful hand:
You are called. The door will open at midnight. Come alone.
And an address. Rue des Saints-Pères, in the sixth arrondissement. An old neighborhood, a street I knew because I had passed by it by chance, never stopping. Old buildings, noble facades, secrets behind every door.
I read the sentence several times. You are called. Called by whom? For what? And this door that would open at midnight, like in a fairy tale or a nightmare.
