Midnight : Ronan's POV My car pulled into the exchange location. The engine ticked as it cooled down, the only sound cutting through the thick silence of the night. This part of the city was dead after midnight - just how I liked it for business like this. I sat in the car for a while, letting my eyes scan the area. Old habits. You don't survive in this line of work by rushing into things, even when you know what's waiting for you inside.

****** ✦MINUTES LATER✦ ◈NORTH FORK OF LONG ISLAND◈ Matilda drove hard, the engine screaming as the city bled out behind her and the streetlights thinned into long, broken intervals, the road ahead stretching darker and wider. “Fuck,” she hissed as she checked the mirror and saw the black car surge closer, its headlights flooding her rear window and pressing her forward no matter how hard she pushed the engine. She slammed the accelerator down again, breath sharp in her chest, the car leaping as the road bent left and opened suddenly into emptiness, fields swallowing the last of the buildings as she took the turn without slowing.

"Where are you staying now? You don't even have enough for a taxi, right? Need a lift?" Matthew sighed, telling Shirley to quit pretending to care. "I don't care if she walks or crawls back," he grumbled. Just then, a white Porsche SUV pulled up smoothly behind Matthew's car. Edwin stepped out and kindly opened the passenger door for me. He gave me a warm smile and asked if I had gotten the divorce papers sorted out. "All set? Hop in. I've got some organic honey and herbs, and my aunt's making some nice herbal tea back home," he said.
