Then, a soft, young voice cut through the quiet.
“Are you hurt?”
I lifted my head slowly, blinking through the blur of tears.
A little girl stood in the doorway, wide curious eyes looking down at me. She had caramel skin, big brown eyes full of concern, and her hair was tied up into two puffy afro buns with bright pink ribbons.
Her eyes suddenly widened. “Luna?”
I scrambled up to my feet a little too fast, forcing a smile on my face like flipping a switch.
“Hey, beautiful,” I said, brushing at my face. “What are you doing here alone? Are you getting in?”
