I took another look down and I wondered how I was going to make such a jump- a leap of faith, that was what it was. Why were they so many guards down there? I was tempted to throw something down at them, maybe a comb to get them distracted, they might decide to leave if I frustrate them well enough. But damn, the length from my floor to the ground was a whole journey on its own, it seemed so far, yet so close- just like looking at a map; it seemed as though you could stretch out to reach it but even you know within you that you just couldn’t. It was impossible, even for someone as strong willed and driven as me.

She nudged me, tail brushing against my leg. From the pit, the Spirit’s voice thundered again: “Faith is the light that survives even the abyss. You carry it still. Go on.” The burning red eyes dimmed, swallowed by the nothing. The silence lifted, broken again by the whisper of wind, the steady rhythm of Jasmine’s breath. I sat there for a long moment, shaking, clutching her fur. My heart was still racing, my mind replaying that terrible second when the world vanished beneath me. But I had leapt. I had trusted, and I was still alive.

I look down and thought, if I fall from here, I wouldn't die but maybe I can break some bones. I pray to God to land me safely down on the ground. I take a deep breath and throw my shoes down in the alley. I cross my legs over to the other side, my legs dangling 15ft above the ground. I see to my left side the sewerage pipe going all the way down. I gather all my courage and leap towards it. I wrap my arms around it tightly and caught the pipe in between my thighs. I am hugging the pipe like a chimp hanging the tree.

I listed, a wave of nervous laughter bubbling up inside me. "Life is full of risks, Amelia," Mom added, her voice gaining a new strength. "But the greatest rewards often come from taking a leap of faith. You can either stay here, letting fear hold you back, or you can march right into his office and clear the air. The choice, my dear, is yours." Alright, Mom," I declared, a newfound resolve echoing in my voice. "You win. I'm going to see Eddie." My mother's smile warmed the room. "That's my girl," she said, her eyes filled with pride. "Just remember, walk in with confidence, head held high."

The void closed around us, and cold marble formed beneath my feet once more. She looked at me, with no mockery now. “This symbolizes true courage. Not reckless fearlessness. You took action despite the fear of losing everything. You took a true leap of faith.”

I had a feeling that knocking on the front door and coming clean about my escape might be the safer ticket. Near the bottom, I had to push away and jump about eight feet to the ground in order to clear the prickly bushes. The leap was nothing. Players no longer net-hopped after matches, but it didn’t mean I hadn’t practiced when bored. Again, thighs, baby—mine were powerful.

Since the sun wouldn’t set for a few hours, I turned off the lights and closed the curtains, then lit several candles around the bedroom. At six-fifty, I set the signed contract on the foot of the bed. Then I hopped up there myself, kneeling the way Richard had shown me with my hands—just so—on top of my thighs. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, then waited. I imagined myself climbing a cliff face. I’d set one foot in front of the other, climbing toward the peak, toward my goal, a leap of faith that would save me from my sins. And ultimately, save me from myself.
