‘’I want you to stay calm and be non-judgemental,’’ ‘’Of course,’’ she nodded and turned to Miles who sat adjacent to her at a distance. Miles pursed his lips and sighed looking down. It seemed like he was collecting his thoughts as his eyes became sharp and brows furrowed. He finally looked up. His posture was stiff but he’d forced himself to relax a bit when he had to address Sophia. Meanwhile, she waited patiently. Miles finally started speaking, ‘’in my busy world, there’s only a few people that I trust. And I want to trust you with one of my secrets.’’

I ask, momentarily blinded by the torrent of color making the room spin. “She says you haven’t checked in with them since you left Maatua last week.” “Yeah… I haven’t. I’ve been busy.” It’s true, in my defense. Dad spirited me to Maatua, which is also called ‘jumping,’ the act of basically walking through space and time and landing somewhere completely new. It’s incredibly difficult and taxing on our powers to do long jumps all the way here, so once in Maatua, I spent a few days with my grandparents before catching the ferry to the mainland.

“Now step off of the edge.” Taking a leap of faith, I raise my foot and step over the edge of time and space. Not really knowing what I was stepping into as I did, but trusting that Estelle had guiding me right. The world seemed to drop out beneath me. Nowadays it’s like a drug to numb out everything else. “One more, then we call it?” Miles asks, shoving his goggles up to rest on his forehead. We just hopped off the lift at the top of a black diamond run- the same one that Miles snapped his femur on last week coming off of a jump. Cried like a fuckin’ baby. He’s been acting like it was no big deal since, but he’s also been riding timid. Rapid shifter healing means we do a lot of stupid, high risk shit up here without considering the consequences, though even with rapid healing, a broken bone still hurts like a bitch.
