Around her were small bowls of herbs, crystals, the bowl of water, and four black candles at each corner of the circle.

Amelia spun around. An elderly woman stood between two pillars. She wore simple white robes. Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head. She hadn’t been there a moment earlier. Amelia instinctively stepped back. “Who are you?” The woman smiled kindly. “My name is Miriam.” “Were you one of the Archivists?” She shook her head. “I was.” “And before that…” She glanced at the pillars. “…I was the Guardian.” Amelia frowned. “How are you here?”

She wrapped herself in a heavy cloak, her hair threaded with silver at the temples now, but the way she moved was the same as when we were young and reckless. The same as when we planned to own kingdoms.

Aaron watched as Miram laughed maliciously after asking him that question.
