“You have talented hands, Lena.” Heat flooded my cheeks but I turned back to the stove quickly, stirring the sauce with more focus than it needed. “Thank you. I source everything locally. The lemons came from the trees just outside.” He didn’t move away but I could feel him behind me now as I worked, close enough that the heat of his body brushed against my back. When I reached for the pepper mill on the shelf above, he stepped in fully, pressing lightly against me as he grabbed it first. His chest grazed my shoulder blades. His cold cedar and crushed mint scent filled my senses.

She grabbed a lever and pulled and a column of jars came out from the roof and landed right next to her. She browsed through the jars, finding the specific type of powder she wanted and then she sprinkled some of it into the batter, giving it a good stir.

Nearly one year went by since my visit. I walked ever closer, very slowly, quite cautiously, because it might just vanish if I moved far too fast. With careful folding, a navy paper bundle sat quite neatly by the box. That felt deliberate somehow, contorting something way down in me. The lid was then lifted after the ribbon was untied at first. "A lemon tree," she said. "In a pot. Like my father had on the Palermo balcony." She held the crushed leaf. "They produce three or four lemons per year if you tend them. My mother treated each one like it was extraordinary."
