' I tried searching my memory. 'Yes, about the visitor I guess? ' 'Yes, I'll send someone to pick you up around 12 noon and bring you to the hospital. I will be there waiting. ' She didn't leave any room for me to ask any questions, so I only nodded. When Thursday finally arrived, I resolved to focus solely on my mother. This visit was about us, and not even the memory of a captivating woman from Paris would distract me. I took an Uber to her place since my car was in for service. As soon as I arrived, my mom opened the door and pulled me into a tight hug. "Hey, stranger, did you just remember that you have a mother that loves you." she said with a laugh.

“Okay mom, I want you to pack a bag, someone is going to come and pick you up in the morning and bring you to my place.” She sighed, I knew she was going to complain. “Nathan, I don’t want to leave my house, if you want to visit me then you can come here.” There, I knew she was going to say something like this. “Mom, please, just this once, listen to me. pack a bag and you will be picked up in the morning.”’

She fluffed the remains of it out then hugged me from behind, settling her chin against my shoulder. “You got a ride over there?” I shrugged. “Figured I’d walk. Or ride my bike.” “Well, I can drive you. D.J. said I could borrow his car while he watches the game.” I nodded. “Thanks, Mom. I appreciate that.” “Let me just get my purse and we’ll head out. I’m doing the food run while D.J. stays here.”

The sound carried faintly through the open window, and it hit me harder than I expected. I hadn’t heard my sister laugh like that in a long time. And I’d missed it. For a second, I almost smiled. Then my stomach twisted, because I also knew who was waiting for her in the parking lot — and how much could change if this went wrong. Mom came down the hall, mug of coffee in one hand, looking half awake. “Did Mariah just pick Jessa up?” “Yeah.” “She looked happy,” Mom said with a sleepy smile. “That’s a nice change.”

My breath caught slightly. “Send your address. I’ll pick you up tomorrow.” He added. I hesitated, then I sent it. There was no turning back now. The next morning, I got ready slowly, my nerves refusing to settle. I can kind of guess where we got our heights from. "Yes, well, your brother won't answer his phone," she says, but I'm rolling my eyes because I know full well what he's doing tonight. I say while turning the car engine off and sitting there while I finish my conversation. "Don't worry, sweety. Your dad is coming too, and he's driving us there."
