MOON OF ASHES
The glow built, brighter and brighter, until even the cracks in the crystal shone silver.
For a moment everything held — power suspended, breath caught, the mountain trembling around them.
Then the crystal screamed.
The scream from the crystal wasn’t a sound so much as a pressure, a wave of force that rattled their bones. Their torches snuffed out all at once. Only the silver glow from their joined hands lit the shaft, flickering like lightning caught inside glass.
Cracks spider-webbed across the suspended mass, each one leaking a mix of red and silver light. The chains trembled and groaned, dust raining down in sheets. The heartbeat inside became a rapid, frantic drum.
