Chapter 4: Full Moon’s Claim The full moon hung heavy in the stormy sky like a watchful eye, casting silvery light through the attic windows of the old lodge. Elara stood by the dusty window, her braided hair falling over her shoulders, cream hoodie pulled tight against the chill that seeped through the cracks. Rain still whispered against the glass, blurring the pine forest beyond into soft, dreamy shapes. She felt like that young girl in the stories—reflective and uncertain under the cool blue glow of uncertainty—yet drawn toward something warmer, a golden pull she couldn’t resist. Her body hummed with the aftermath of stolen moments, a secret fire that made every breath feel heavier.

The Moon Festival transformed Moonridge into something out of a dream. Lanterns glowed along every path, swaying in the cool night breeze, their golden light washing the village in warmth. Stalls brimmed with food, music pulsed from drums and flutes, and laughter filled the air as wolves and humans alike celebrated beneath the rising full moon. I sighed softly and collapsed in my tiny bed of hay in my cell, not the best idea if the horrifying thud was any indication, but I fell asleep right away so it didn't matter. In the morning, I was woken up with the announcement of visitors. I smiled as I sat up, scooting closer to the cells as all the young pups of the pack raced over with birthday cards, Moonwell cards, and Get better soon cards, all reading some version of 'we miss you' in children's handwriting. "Awe, you pups are the best. Did you all make these? Who paid for them?" I gathered the cards up and read each one happily. "Mr. Wells paid for them!" One of my pups yipped happily.

I lifted a paper from the table to examine the sketch on it, but the more I tried to make out the pattern, the lesser I understood. Shit! I'm never cut out for intellectual shit. Feeling useless, I dropped it with a hiss. "On the next full moon," Drustian answered, pitching the papers together. I did a mental calculation of the day the full moon falls on, as I watched Drustian merging the papers together to form a comprehensive whole.
