Ayla was blonde, a blonde so light it looked like silver in the sun. But they talked about a woman as well, but I don’t remember ever meeting Alex and Asher's mother. And to ask about her was out of the question. I made a mental note to talk with my parents when we got home. Could Ayla be related to Alpha Adam? Is she a daughter from the Blue Moon Pack? But why would a man like Adam send his daughter away? What could have been so wrong for him to have to? Or is all this just my imagination?

It should have terrified me too. Vittoria and Mother had never gotten along. Mother had wanted a daughter, not a weapon. She hated how Father molded Vittoria, how he stripped her of softness and replaced it with steel. She fought him about it when she dared but Christian Guerra did not bend. They had a strange marriage. Built on power rather than affection. When Father died, Mother fled with my youngest sister. I let them. I kept tabs, of course. I always knew where they were. I didn’t want them running to Nikolai or worse, to Vittoria. As long as they stayed away from that path, they were harmless.

Mom asks out of partial curiosity as she sinks into the couch, her legs crossed on the island table. "She's old, full of wrinkles, and can barely lift a cup, and me?" I give a little twirl, "I am young, succulent, and beautiful. A typical Aphrodite's rebirth and might I add, a goddess in bed." I wink at the last part and she makes a gagging expression. "You need prayers, Adelina," she shakes her head, "In fact, you are a lost cause. A full session of exorcism can't even save you."

"I know her. Tia was in the bed next to Dad. She's an orphan. Got better thanks to donations. "I'm happy for her. And Mom. They've got each other now. Tia's cool—smart, super energetic. I feel better knowing Mom's not alone." Elayne hugged me tight. "It's okay to cry." And just like that, it all broke. "I'm so jealous. Why her? Why does she get to be with Mom—and I don't?"

Mom was still in her early 20s then, so she had believed every single word my father had said. A while after that, she got pregnant with me, and that was when my parents hurriedly got married. Mom told me that the ten months she was pregnant had been the best time of her life. She was spoiled rotten by my father, who made her all sorts of delicious food and fulfilled her every need. When I was born, however, the tune changed for my father when he realized that I was a girl. His attitude toward Mom changed even before she was discharged from the hospital. And whenever I cried or made a fuss, he would scold her and call her all sorts of derogatory names.

She was the ally I had been searching for. So, under the guise of an anonymous fan, I penned her a letter, baiting her with the story of 'the mother who wouldn't spare her daughter $80 for living expenses.'

The past month was her fattening the cow for slaughter. Every now and then I hear my mother screaming from nightmares that never have seemed to go away. I know what ever she went through it left a permanent scar. I wonder if this vision is bad enough to leave a scar as well.
