My eyes widened as the light carried me upward, defying the pull of the earth. The agony in my chest receded, replaced by an impossible serenity. And then, she appeared. Moonlight gathered at the cliff’s edge, weaving itself into a silhouette of grace. Silver hair, eyes like stagnant pools of starlight, a presence so ancient and overwhelming that the world seemed to hold its breath. Lunethra... the Moon Goddess, my real mother. Mom gasped, a ragged, tearful sound. “Eli’s mother...” she whispered, falling to her knees.

"And your mother?" Something moved across Romulus's face — not pain, exactly. Something older than pain. "A gypsy. She ruled her own pack until the rebellion came for it. A Desert Wolf, and a fierce one. No soul ever crossed Agatha Andreas and walked away with their voice box intact." The ghost of a laugh almost reached his lips. "A house of fighters, I can see that." [Stay strong, mama. I promise, I will get you out of this.] [Be careful, Tabi. Don't worry about me. Protect your sister.] "You should return now." Helgar's voice suddenly interrupted the link. "Remember, eyes are always on you. One slip up, and I'll rip out your mother's heart myself. Do you understand?" "Yes, Elder Helgar."

Still, I'm just so worried about this family that I've turned upside down in just one day. "She did," I speak up, my voice scratchy and weak, but steady enough to carry over the space between us. I push myself off the ledge of the fountain. "My mother's name is Elena. She raised me alone. And until an hour ago, I had no idea any of you existed." Greta's eyes lock back onto mine, searching my face. "Nineteen years..." she whispers, a single tear cutting a track through her flawless makeup. "She took my baby?"
