I hurry back to the bed again and take my mother's hand. "Ma, wake up." I plead. "Ma, please wake up." She does not move. But... "Her hand is warmer." I say, hope a precious precarious thing in my voice. It is still nowhere near werewolf temperature but it is no longer cold as death anymore. "She is getting better." I say, my voice holding tentative happiness despite what is happening outside. No matter what it is, I know I can handle it, but I cannot lose my mother. Not like this.

They were seeing rerun episodes of their favourite horror series. Clarissa absent-mindedly ran her fingers through Scarlett’s hair. Scarlett shut her eyes and let out a satisfied hum. It was the most relaxing thing ever, to be in her mother’s arms. For the longest, her mother had been a steady handy holding her through whatever challenges life threw at her. In her mother’s arms, she didn’t have to worry. “How did your day go, ma?” “The same old…” she answered.

The moan was one of pure ecstasy, and it only grew louder as I approached. The voice sounded familiar… I knew that voice anywhere. Fueled with rage, I pushed open the door. I caught Mom lying in bed. The back of her blouse was pushed up, exposing a patch of skin. Bryan sat on the edge of the bed, his hand still on Mom’s back. Mom turned over and sat up. Her forehead was damp with sweat, and her cheeks flushed. She seemed flustered about seeing me.

Why would he even think he has any right to mark me? “There is,” Mom replies, pressing her palm to my forehead to check my temperature. “Her temperature is dangerously high. She needs to be put in cold water, with you in the tub to keep her steady. It should help bring her temperature down.” She rises, moving toward the bathroom. “No!” I croak, grabbing her hand weakly to stop her. “I’m cold. I don’t want cold water to touch me.” The words scrape out of my throat like sandpaper. Speaking feels like it’s draining the last of my strength.

I sat down next to my mother. She draped part of the blanket over my legs. Mom said, "I'm sure you'll love watching this program with me." She gave me the popcorn dish. I started eating popcorn as soon as we started the series. Mom chuckled at the TV personalities. "This female is out here acting pregnant to attract the man; you should see her." Some females have no shame. They'll do everything to get financial gain." Ma told me. Her remarks struck a chord with me because it seemed like she was speaking to me personally. However, was what I was doing all that horrible compared to what those TV characters were doing?

A coughing fit took me over. “We need to heal her!” Mom’s warped voice reached my ears. It felt like she was somewhere very far away. “We’re surrounded on all sides, we can’t get away to the safe house,” the apprentice argued. As the world around me started to fade, I saw my mother’s face grow closer, giving me a sense of safety and warmth that I needed most at that moment. Her eyes were focused on something beyond her, a look of desperation in them as her hands trembled.

Her touch was warm, motherly. “It is nothing. Please, don’t mention it. Being here with you brings me comfort too.” The gesture stirred something in Miriam. Her mind drifted to her daughter. Amber... She remembered the last time her daughter had touched her shoulder the same way. “You worry too much, Mother,” Amber had said, her voice teasing but full of affection. A sigh escaped Miriam’s lips, and a faint, wistful smile touched her face. “May Amber and Arnold return safely,” she murmured.

Do you remember anything?" Her mother turned her head slightly towards Elena, her eyes filled with confusion and weakness. With a croaking voice, barely audible, she managed to utter, "Water." Elena's eyes widened, realizing her mother's immediate need. Without a moment's hesitation, she reached for the glass of water on the bedside table and carefully brought it to her mother's lips. Her trembling hands guided the cool liquid into her mother's parched mouth.
