Not concern. Something closer to understanding. I looked away first. That felt safer.

She instructed her to go to the fridge and serve herself. Kala reluctantly stood up and made her way to the fridge, obediently following her mother's directive. After several hours of discussion, Felix and I prepared to leave, and a sense of warmth filled the air. Mary stood up from her seat, bidding us farewell with a loving embrace. "May the good Lord be with you," she said, her voice filled with genuine affection. She then turned to me, opening her arms for a hug. I welcomed her embrace, feeling a sense of acceptance and love from Felix's mother. It was a beautiful moment, one that solidified my place in their family.

Her mother squeezed it gently. She had her mother back. The apartment felt warmer than it had in weeks. Not just from the food simmering on the stove or the soft lights Cassie had insisted on stringing along the windows, but from the sound of laughter arriving before the door even fully opened. Chloe was the first through it.

Luka pov Once the nurse tells us our mother is awake, we jump to our feet and follow in her steps. Our fathers look all sorts of relieved, and I think I notice a slight smile on dad’s lips. We walk in what seems to be circles until the nurse stops and motions her hand towards something. Our attention focuses on the two women before us. Mom’s sitting in a wheelchair, tears in her eyes, and Sarah’s next to her, holding hands and sobbing. It takes me a moment to understand they’re looking at something behind a massive window.
