She covered the phone’s receiver and turned to me on the bed. “What was the film about?” she asked, a hint of panic in her voice. “I don’t know,” I said lazily, still sprawled on the bed. It was a horror story with a romance subplot. I didn’t tell Sabrina that. Sabrina looked away, a little panicky. “I’m sorry, Denzel,” Sabrina said into the phone after uncovering it. “I honestly wasn’t watching. My life’s been a mess.”

"You're doing so well, little hunter." When her breathing had finally steadied to something resembling normal, she spoke. Her voice was small, broken. "He used to do that." She was still staring at nothing, her hand still pressed against her neck like she could feel phantom fangs there. "Michail. He would feed from me and then he would make me..." She cut herself off with a choked sob. Understanding crashed over me like a bucket of ice water, stealing the breath from my lungs. Michail had fed from her.

"Don't play dumb. It's just me and you, you can drop the stupid act." June blinked twice, her lips parted as she tried to process what she just said, "I- I don't understand." Mrs. Scott's words left June bewildered, unsure of how to respond. She couldn't fathom why Mrs. Scott was accusing her of playing a trick, was she testing her, or worse she didn't like her?

Then Ty’s, rough and intimate and devastatingly close: “Come here.” Revulsion tore through me so hard I nearly stepped back. “That’s what it does,” I whispered. “Not just learning but copying.”

That it’s— A gentle, feminine little voice calls out from the other side. “Mummy?”

She opened her mouth to snarl— —and a small hand appeared over the edge of the crib. Tiny fingers. Crayon streaks on pale skin. “Mama?” a small voice called. Not quite right. Echoing, like it was coming down a long, tinny hallway. Everything in her roared. “Luna,” she said. Or thought she did. Her throat didn’t work. “Mama!” The voice came again. Clearer. Sharper. Not dream-echo tinny. Real.

Whenever he said something funny, she laughed so hard her shoulders shook, even reaching out to lightly slap his thigh. It looked less like conversation and more like flirting. When we arrived at the private room, Carrie casually handed the menu to Gabe. "You're my childhood friend. You should know what I like without me having to say it." Gabe rested his chin against her neck. "Of course. I even know how many moles you have on your body." I silently took a seat to the side. Not a single dish on the table was something I could eat. Gabe filled my glass with wine, then picked up his own.

"Mommy, don't listen to him! He's the one who appeared out of nowhere and started stealing all my nutrients! Now, he even wants to make you misunderstand me!" Lucky's voice rang out, so aggrieved and pitiful that it made my heart ache. I quickly patted my belly to comfort him. "Don't worry, Lucky. I won't believe in some random, unexplained voice!" I looked around, trying to find the source of the other voice, only for it to appear again. "Mom, stop looking. I'm Sunny, I'm right inside your belly!
