Irene hisses and jerks the potato out of her grasp. The cut is deep. Her blood spills over the top of the island. She bites her tongue, hissing through the pain as she turns towards the sink. Opening the tap, she lets the water run over her hand, washing the blood that doesn't seem to stop flowing.

“You don’t walk into a private archive unless you plan to leave pieces behind.” Valentine stepped out. Calm as breathing. “If you’re going to threaten someone,” she said, “at least aim higher than bad theater.” Heads snapped toward her. Big man frowned. “Who the hell are you?” “Someone who noticed you left your flank wide open,” Valentine answered. She drove her elbow into his throat. The sound was wet. Ugly. Satisfying. Second man lunged. Valentine ducked. Grabbed his wrist. Twisted until the gun skittered across concrete. Kicked his knee sideways. He dropped screaming.
