A place where I didn’t have to keep proving my worth to people who had already decided it didn’t exist. Now, with one letter, one vision, and one truth—I was a beacon. A hunted one. Tessa’s voice pulled me back to the present. “I found something,” she whispered, slipping into my tent like a shadow. Her eyes were bright, cheeks flushed from running. “What?” “In Madam Theresa’s book. The old journal she left you. There’s a page I’d never noticed before. It was stitched into the spine—hidden.” She pulled out the book from her satchel. A thin leather journal, frayed and worn. She turned carefully to the middle, then peeled back a false page.

God, the books. I'd already used my employee discount twice. Once on a new romantasy release that had been all over BookTok. Once on a dark mafia romance that promised morally gray antiheroes and enemies-to-lovers tension. The irony wasn't lost on me. Tuesday night, I actually slept through the night for the first time in weeks. No nightmares. No waking up at three a.m. with anxiety clawing at my chest. Progress. Small, fragile progress, but progress nonetheless. Wednesday morning, I woke up almost... not happy, but lighter. Like the weight in my chest had shifted slightly, become more bearable.

I wasn’t. “May I have it back?” ‘You should give it back, you rude twat!’ Bane scolded me. I took the book up to my eyes and scanned the content. Save for a few words on the front, it was relatively empty. “Oh. It’s a journal,” I rolled my eyes. “And it’s empty,” she had an accusing look on her face…one that made me frown as I handed the book back to her. “What?” “You know, since you forgot things…you didn’t think keeping a daily log of things would help you remember when your memory goes ‘poof!’?”

It felt like a world I might actually want to be a part of someday. I wandered into a bookstore with crooked shelves and a sleepy old wolf man behind the counter. He nodded once when I came in, sniffed as if to confirm who I was, then went right back to his paper. I spent an hour in there, fingers tracing over old maps of pack territories and novels with titles like ‘The Luna’s Song and Moonbound Hearts’. I bought a journal and a pen. I didn’t know what I’d write yet, but it felt like something I needed.

Forbidden knowledge had been inked into every page with intentionality I could only thank the author for. I opened to the page I had dog-eared for days, sinking into the information there.

So why did I feel like I was forgetting something important? I walked over to my nightstand and pulled out my journal—the leather-bound one Jules had given me last year for my birthday with the inscription "For your thoughts, dreams, and everything in between" on the cover. I hadn't written in it much lately, too caught up in work and usual the chaos. But this morning, I felt the need to write. To ground myself before everything changed,to reassure my self and be grateful. Things weren't perfect but it felt like if I wrote in this book, I would feel better even more free.
