I looked away as soon as Martha dragged me to the dance floor where we joined the rest of the students who were dancing too. My eyes glanced on the stage and it was a huge stage where a band was playing who were also wearing costumes. They had a massive marquee with our high school’s name on it and they transformed the entire stage into a scary graveyard with tombstones and fake cobwebs. The entire ballroom was filled with black and orange balloons and so much spooky designs. “This is going to be our last party as high school!” Martha screams over the loud music while I was dancing with her. I nod with a smile on my face and found myself enjoying. “I can’t believe I am dancing!”

Then came the majorettes, leading the way for the drum major and the marching band, who played a jazzy rendition of “The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You,” with the horns and reeds bopping side to side in time with the music. Shannon shot pictures of it all, stooping, stretching, jumping out into the street, whatever necessary to get the best shot. Her face was alive with fun

We smiled at each other. We performed to the music of Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams. We wore matching pop outfits in black, red and gray. Suffice to say, we earned the biggest cheers and the IV-1 Dance Group was born. I saw Lance waving at us and I waved back. Izzie was looking around then smiled vibrantly at someone in the Sophomore side. Jon was hugging all of us. And Ira was the loudest cheerleader of all.

Mason holds Mia’s hands and they do something that is not dancing but involves a lot of jumping and they’re laughing and Nick picks Mia up with one arm and takes my hand with the other and we dance, the four of us, messy and loud and nothing like a waltz, and the band plays faster and Mason’s jacket flies open and Mia shrieks and I’m laughing and Nick is laughing — the real laugh, the chest laugh, the one I heard over pizza — and my ribs ache with it.

Cindy picked her glass and sipped her champagne again, her eyes sparkling with planning energy. “Speaking of the big day, have you decided on the music yet? String quartet for the ceremony, obviously, but for the reception I’m still pushing for that jazz band back in college. That one you were so obsessed with. I bet Bryce's going to love it too. I can already picture you in slow dances under the stars, Bryce spinning you around while everyone watches, and then later, when Keira’s asleep, you two can sneak off for some very married activities in one of the guest suites.”

I grinned at the band then we started playing “They gonna clean up your looks, with all the lies in the books to make a citizen out of you, because the sleep with a gun and keep an eye on you son, so they can watch all the things you do.” I played them out with Teenagers from My Chemical Romance. We then put our instruments down and left the stage amidst cheers. “Andy that was the best performance we have done in a long time!” Claude congratulated me with a grin. “I think so to. Damn that felt great!” I said with a grin. The headmaster came in and said with a pleasant smile. “Andy you knocked my socks off! I didn’t know you were in a band! And the lead!” he said and held out his hand.

Sam said and bowed at me. “You’re welcome. You don’t need to bow.” I smiled at him and he smiled back. Then I turn to Mama. “It’s a dream come true, noona. This is our first time to officially play as a band.” He said. “Thank you, noona.” He smiled at me. “You’re welcome.” I smiled back. “Excuse me, noonas. We need to go now and prepare for the next set.” Danny then chimed in. “Oh, okay. Fighting boys! Fighting Étoile Band!” I cheered for them.
