What secrets could he possibly be hiding now? Lena had seen Daniel open the drawer once before, late one night when he thought she was asleep. The memory was hazy, but she distinctly remembered him retrieving a key hidden within one of his prized books on the top shelf. With trembling hands, Lena began scanning the rows of leather-bound volumes, each title meticulously chosen to reflect Daniel’s cultivated image—a man of sophistication, intellect, and taste. But now, Lena knew it was all a facade.

~JESSICA~ ~ONE WEEK LATER~ "What are you reading?" Daniel asked, standing in the doorway. I was sitting cross legged on the bed with a pillow and laptop on my lap. I looked up and saw Daniel in the doorway, I smiled at him. I had been so engrossed that I hadn't heard him get back from work. "I'm looking at my veterinary nurse courses I would love to take” I said, turning the laptop around to show him. "I'm trying to work out if it's feasible"

After finishing showering, Daniel put on casual clothes, a gray knitted sweater and black trousers. He combed his hair casually, then went down to the dining room. The aroma of chicken soup and toast filled the air, tempting his hungry stomach.

Daniel I stood there, my hands trembling on my knees, my gaze avoiding Daniel's. The room seemed to shrink around me, the air growing thick and suffocating. The silence was heavy, almost oppressive, as if the words I had just spoken hovered in the air, unprocessed, unabsorbed. She silently watches him go and lets out a sigh of relief when he gets out. Running through the night streets of New York with a broad smile on his face, he hasn’t felt this happy in a while. Daniel finally feels alive and free, just talking to her gave him such perks that he never imagined he would ever get. The smile his face wears is unimaginably big; he can’t describe the emotions that are coursing through his body right now.
