I brace the bottoms of my feet against it and push back.

With a tug, I'm lifted over the ledge, and my feet slide into warm coal, covering my skin in black powder.
"Kaden, please!" I shriek, and he releases me. Weightlessness seizes me, and I squeeze my eyes shut as I crash to the concrete. Pain crepitates up my left elbow, but I ignore it and scrawl backward like my life depends on it. I fall off the edge of the concrete slab and hit my head on the floor. I lie flat on my back and stare at the ceiling, sipping the air. Up in the beams, I see Henry's face, his hungry eyes, and seedy smile
