When I turned to leave, my steps were faltering because standing only a few feet away, were my two best friends… and something told me they heard every word! . . TBC

He even threw the shirt on the floor. "Now quickly put this on!" my friend ordered as he threw a dress right in my face. "Don't expect us to serve you like a queen because you don't deserve to be our queen!" My friends treated me harshly. They even went so far as to push me to put on the dress immediately. "Put on your clothes! And put on your shoes too!" Another friend threw a shoe at me. It's a good thing it didn't hit my face. Because the heels of the shoes had almost hit my forehead.

He narrowed his eyes slightly. “You okay?” he asked. I nodded, slipping my hand from his. He frowned a little but didn’t say anything. “I’m fine. You should go find Aaron. I’m sure some of your friends are around.” “I don’t have any friends,” he muttered. I huffed, patting his shoulder. “You do, Voss. Aaron’s your friend.” He pressed his lips together like that didn’t sit well with him. I chuckled. “Just go,” I muttered, and he tilted his head before walking off.

I managed to say admist stammering words. Hilary let out a cackling sound. “You’re even more stupid than I thought!” She said. The words hurt more than I expected. “Friends? Look at you! Your friend is that stupid Nerd but now that I think of it, you don’t even deserve a friend. I mean you trashed her out just for a cheerleading outfit. Is there someone more stupid than you? I don’t think so. The funny thing is that you were so horrible at cheerleading, a camel could do better.”

The doors close and I’m alone with Einstein and I slide down the wall until I’m sitting on the floor and I cry without sound because I don’t want him to hear how scared I am. When the doors open again I stand up and walk through the lobby and people stare but I keep my eyes straight ahead and the duvet drags behind me like some broken wedding dress. Outside the air is cold and the sun is too bright and I realize I have no shoes and no money and no phone because everything is still up in room seven. But I keep walking anyway because standing still feels worse. I walk three blocks and my feet hurt and the blood has stopped but my head still hurts and Einstein has fallen asleep against my chest

"You didn’t listen to me. Now you have to bear your burdens alone, and don’t you dare drag me into this." I nodded slowly at the look in his eyes. Why was he so upset about it? The words stung so deeply. Was that really how he saw it? As a chore? Maybe I’d made a mistake. "Sorry for thinking I could rely on my best friend." I turned around and left the training ground. I heard his footsteps following behind me. I wiped the tears escaping my eyes. Telling him about the pregnancy wouldn’t be a good idea. Who knows—he’d probably give me a two-hour lecture on how I’d messed up.

“Sorry—just a sec.” He swiped to answer. “Nathaniel!” Maya’s eyes widened. Nathaniel. She hadn’t heard that name in years. Ethan’s childhood best friend. The boy who was always glued to Ethan’s side during summers, dragging him into endless soccer matches and wild lake swims. She took a careful step back, grabbing the chance to slip away. “Yeah, I just got in,” she heard Ethan say behind her as she slipped into her room. “What? You’re coming down too? That’s awesome!”

Her feet kicked nervously against the mattress. “You excited, sweetheart?” I asked softly. She nodded, but her little hands fidgeted. “What if I don’t make any friends?” Oh. I knelt in front of her and tucked a curl behind her ear. “Molly Edwards, listen to me.” Her big hazel eyes blinked up at me. “Friends aren’t made in one day. They’re made by being yourself. And you… you are the kindest, funniest little girl I know. Anyone would be lucky to be your friend.”
