Where my mother and Ivanov had stood just seconds ago, there was only a scorched, smoldering debris. Her body was completely gone, burnt to ash in the flash of the explosion. She had taken the monster with her. Ivan reached the gate, dropping to his knees, his hands clawing at the black floor as if he could somehow piece her back together. He sobbed, a violent, chest-heaving sound of a man whose entire universe had just been wiped off the earth. He wept into the dirt, completely broken. I stood there in the center of the ruined warehouse, staring blankly at the smoke clearing into the night sky. I almost couldn't believe it. My mother… was gone.

My legs gave under me as I wept — hurt and heartbroken beyond words — feeling empty and blissfully numb. My phone buzzed again and I glanced at it to see a message from an unknown number:

That’s what I’m starting to realize. Or maybe my life has always been ruined and I only realized it now.

She risked a glance at him, but his face was unreadable. She took a shaky breath, the memory of that brief, shining moment of happiness already tainted by the crash that followed. "I was imagining it," she whispered, looking at the empty, sunken nest. "The colors, the lights... building something that was mine. And then I realized. A nest... it's supposed to have things from... from before. Things that make you feel safe." Her voice broke, a raw anguish tearing through. "Bu-but then I... I have nothing," she choked out, the tears she'd fought back now streaming freely down her face. "I have nothing from my past that can make it smell safe. Nothing to make me feel safe."

I love him yet he ruined our marriage,” I whispered against my sobs and let myself broke down in pain. Yes, he's the one who ruined it. He might have seen me naked with another guy but I know nothing happened. If anything did… he would have known I didn’t want it to happen at all. He really did it intentionally.
