Seven years passed. I had taken Sebastian’s advice and enrolled at Columbia Business School. I studied hard, graduating at the top of my class. With Sebastian’s help and the knowledge I had from my last life, I started my own import-export business. I worked long hours, I made tough decisions, I built my empire brick by brick. By 1952, my company was one of the most successful in New York. In my last life, I had always wanted to start my own business.

Kachina left me. She covers her mouth in shock. Here she is, pondering for a moment and realizing that Kagan’s story had already begun in the year 2020, together with the mischievous girl, Shanta, which had sprouted eleven years ago.

Another tough question. “Well, um… I feel like it’s personal preference, but truth be told, every writer has, at least once in their lifetime, written at least one story that has significant references or connections to their own life. I won’t lie, I have, too. In fact one of my stories are based entirely on my early life.” I answered truthfully, as best as I could. “You mean… it’s an exact copy? Truly your life story?” Asked another.

Each story cut into me even through the fog. I tried to cry but my body lagged behind my emotions, tears burned but didn’t fall. They kept going. “I was famous,” one said bitterly, “they liked that”. “I was rich,” another whispered, “they hated that.” “I was alone,” someone else said, “they counted on that.” Hands stayed on me, holding me upright, keeping me from collapsing completely.

My life wasn’t the clean, mapped-out one, but right now, it was one of those you would pray to God for in life. I never believed when people said good things about some families or where those book stories always came along the sweet families they write about, but my own life right now is the perfect story that must be written. It must be read to other kids in the new generation as one of the lives, the families that had a happy ever after.
