I glanced at the cover.
“Where did you even get this?” I asked.
She shrugged. “Found it in the closet.”
Right. I’d forgotten I’d left some of my sister’s old books here. The last time I’d sat here, my sister had been with me. We’d hidden from the storm, from Father’s guards, from everything that hunted us. Now I was hiding again — only this time, it was with another person I cared about.
I looked down at the page Evelyn had been on. Some romance scene — overly sweet, too easy. And yet, a single line caught my eye, something about the way a man touched a woman like she was the only real thing left in the world.
