SIX MONTHS LATER VIOLET A widely known fact about me: I don’t like surprises. I’m jumpy. I make unholy noises. My face gets beet red, and my body gets hot and tingly, and sometimes I feel like I’ve run out of air. Unfortunately, that combination is the perfect reaction for people who do like surprises. Which is why I’ve spent my life being surprised. Birthday parties, jump-scares, visitors I wasn’t expecting… People love to see the dramatic reaction, and I seem unable to help but give it to them.

I couldn’t read her expressions and thoughts. Anyway, I decided to shift my mind away from that. “I have a surprise for you, Aurora,” I said. And I watched her face get filled with a shock she couldn’t hold back or keep in.

This was embarrassing. “ Surprise? ” He said dryly not sure of what else he could say. * * * *

My eyebrows shot up in surprise, and I couldn’t help but pause in my actions, processing what she had just revealed. “What the hell?”

he cut in, in a much softer tone now, a hint of surprise lacing his words, as he stepped closer to me. I hesitated at first, unsure of what would come after he realizes I was exactly what he asked. Then I nodded slowly, feeling my face burn with embarrassment. His eyes widened, and for the first time, I saw real surprise in his expression. “Unbelievable!” He voiced.

“What do you mean this… this will be mine?” I couldn’t believe it. Couldn’t process it. Couldn’t even find the right emotion to wear—shock, awe, gratitude, confusion—they all hit me at once, leaving me trembling inside. And yet he just stood there, calm and collected, as though what he had just said wasn’t the most insane, generous, and surreal thing I had ever heard in my life. “Surprise.” He said, his lips curling into a smile for the first time since the past few days.

“Surprisee….” And everyone stood frozen in their place in shock.

Is this where the surprise awaits me? As I approach the yacht, a group of people stands at the entrance, their faces filled with excitement. They turn towards me, their eyes widening in surprise. And to my astonishment, I see not only Devon but also my sisters among them. "Surprise!!! Congratulations!!!" They scream in unison and I just stand there, completely in shock. What the hell?

I sent the text, so I need to own it. Cassidy: Relax. I’m not upset. I’m not offended. I’m not ignoring your texts. Cassidy: I’m sorry that I’ve got you so messed up in the head you worry about that shit. Collin: *SpongeBob gif wiping brow* Collin: Don’t apologize to me. I was surprised to get the text, happy but surprised. I can imagine it took guts to send that. I just don’t want to assume your comfort level on texting about this.
