Beatrice Beecham's Ship of Shadows
Maud shuffled on the spot, her boots squeaking on the tiling like mice in the larder.
“What are ye tellin’ us, young’un?”
“The tablet’s gone,” Thomas said. “It’s like . . . It’s like . . . ”
Beatrice’s anger was beginning to boil over. “For God’s sake, Thomas! Spit it out.”
Thomas looked at them both, and the confusion in his eyes made it clear to Beatrice and Maud there was only truth in the words that followed.
“It’s like I dreamed the whole thing,” he whispered.
“Even after dreams, ye can sometimes recall em,” Maud coaxed. “They may be smudged but ye can still make em out if ye put yer mind to it.”
